Today, we’re uncovering the story of the New Cross Fire of 1981, a tragic event that galvanised the Black British community and exposed deep-seated racial tensions in the UK. When a devastating fire claimed the lives of 13 young Black people at a house party in New Cross, South London, the lack of urgency from authorities and media sparked outrage. This tragedy led to the historic Black People’s Day of Action, one of the largest Black British civil rights marches, demanding justice and accountability. Tune in to explore how this pivotal moment shaped Black activism, community resistance, and the fight against institutional racism in Britain. 🎧 Listen to the full audio podcast: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/5a1d6004-4b60-4b01-8e00-76b744e852de/exclusive-content 📺 Watch the entire series: Week 1: YouTube Week 2: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/black_history_buff_777/ Week 3: Exclusively on Patreon and Steady https://www.patreon.com/Blackhistorybuff https://steadyhq.com/en/blackhistory Week 4: TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@blackhistorybuff?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Get the complete series on Patreon and Steady: https://www.patreon.com/Blackhistorybuff https://steadyhq.com/en/blackhistory The Black History Buff Podcast is a fully independent project. Today, we’re uncovering the powerful story of the Mangrove Nine, a defining moment in Black British civil rights history. In 1970, a group of activists, including Darcus Howe and Barbara Beese, took a stand against police brutality and racial injustice after repeated targeting of the Mangrove restaurant in Notting Hill, a hub for the Caribbean community. Their historic trial exposed institutional racism within the police and became a turning point for Black activism in Britain. Tune in to explore how their fight for justice shaped the Black British civil rights movement and the ongoing struggle for equality. 🎧 Listen to the full audio podcast: https://app.redcircle.com/shows/5a1d6004-4b60-4b01-8e00-76b744e852de/exclusive-content 📺 Watch the entire series: Week 1: YouTube Week 2: Instagram https://www.instagram.com/black_history_buff_777/ Week 3: Exclusively on Patreon and Steady https://www.patreon.com/Blackhistorybuff https://steadyhq.com/en/blackhistory Week 4: TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@blackhistorybuff?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Get the complete series on Patreon and Steady: https://www.patreon.com/Blackhistorybuff https://steadyhq.com/en/blackhistory The Black History Buff Podcast is a fully independent project. Hey Family, it’s King Kurus, the Black History Buff. Today, we’re diving into the story of the Harlem Hellfighters—a regiment of African American soldiers who proved their bravery on the battlefields of World War I but returned home to a nation that refused to honour their sacrifice. Denied the chance to fight under their own flag, these men took up arms alongside the French, earning their highest military honour, the Croix de Guerre, for their unmatched courage. 191 days on the front lines. No ground lost. No men captured. Yet, when the war ended, the battles they faced were far from over. Racism, segregation, and violence awaited them back home, a cruel reminder that the fight for dignity and equality was far from won. So, what happens when a country benefits from your service but refuses to acknowledge your worth? And how do we honour those who fought for a nation that didn’t fight for them? That’s what I’m unpacking in this episode. But that’s what I think—what do you think? Drop your thoughts in the comments, share this episode, and if you want to support my work, join the Black History Village on Patreon. Black History is World History. Stay Blessed. What happens when the simple act of pursuing knowledge is deemed a threat to society? In 1958, Clennon King, a Black historian and activist, applied to the University of Mississippi, an institution that had never admitted a Black student. Instead of being welcomed, King was forcibly committed to a mental asylum, declared insane for daring to challenge segregation. This episode delves into the extraordinary and tragic story of Clennon King—a man whose pursuit of equality and education exposed the deep-rooted insanity of systemic racism in America. Discover how King’s defiance paved the way for others like James Meredith and ignited debates about civil rights, institutional power, and the cost of standing up for justice. We’ll explore the broader historical context, the weaponisation of mental health diagnoses, and the parallels to modern struggles for equality. Clennon King’s story isn’t just history—it’s a reflection of the ongoing fight for justice today. Listen now to uncover the untold legacy of the man who was declared insane for seeking an education. Hey Family, it’s King Kurus, your Black History Buff, back with another eye-opening episode. Today, we’re breaking down the shocking story of a Cook County judge who got caught sharing a blatantly racist meme—but instead of being fired, she got reassigned and sent to bias training. This isn’t just about one judge; it’s about a system that continues to protect people like her while putting Black lives at risk. We dive into the history of racism in the U.S. justice system, from Black Codes to modern-day over-policing, and why symbolic actions like bias training don’t solve the real problem. Can the system ever really change? Or are we stuck in this cycle of exposure and empty apologies? Let’s talk about it. The Black History Buff Podcast is a fully independent project.
